Western Approaches Museum is Liverpool’s war museum. Stashed inside its bunkers and subterranean rooms is the story of how the British Armed Forces engineered an Allied victory. It was here that they fomented plans to shore up the Western Approaches and fend off the German onslaught. Formerly top secret documents lay bare the plotting and planning that was part of a concerted war effort. Many of the original tools and furnishings that were once operational within the army outpost have been preserved, including a phone which had a direct line to the war cabinet in London. You’ll visit the Map Room, the nerve centre from which the Battle of the Atlantic was orchestrated, and, as you cast your eyes over the maps annotated with shipping routes and convoy lines, you’ll find yourself transported back in time to the 1940s when the world was at war and the enemy could be anywhere.

Thoroughly enjoyed my visit with my youngest son. Was a very quiet late Saturday afternoon and we pretty much had the run of the place. I wouldn't say it was more than an hour to get round it all - if you stopped and read every single thing - you could walk straight through in about 5 mins - which would be pointless. We stopped and took pictures, they had a display of various items you could pick up and look at, many various hats from different services and a Baby Gasmask outfit!
